“Having an outlet for self-expression often reveals the creativity hiding within you.” Kathy Spampinato
Creativity and Artistic Expression
Our hearts tell us that life would be awesome if we just got the balance right. We juggle different components seeking a sense of satisfaction. Focusing on our unfulfilled needs just makes them stand out in stark contrast to our reality. Becoming absorbed with ourselves and our wants is empty. So where do we go from here?
One area I would suggest exploring, is your sense of artistic expression. Having an outlet for self-expression often reveals the creativity hiding within you. Creativity is part of the human experience; it is integral to our design. However, not everyone has had the opportunity to develop those creative and artistic leanings. The Bible tells us that we are made in the image of God, and He is the ultimate creative: the maker of heaven and earth. God designed a life where his love, and our relationship with him, satisfies our hearts. We have been designed and created “in the image of God” so our creativity is part of the plan to resemble his image.
I believe part of the understanding we need is that we are Spirit, Soul, and Body. We are triune: a unity of the three parts, integrated and working as one. This is a reflection of our triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Being in the image of God also means that we desire to be creative, to innovate, to interact with others, and participate in something meaningful. God is the creator of the universe and everything in it. He has an amazing capacity to create the new and unique. The world did not exist before He spoke it. He chose to share with us: to be a part of us and the world He made. We desire to share inspiration from God and create something compelling because we are like him. Our creativity might involve something practical or something more technological. It could be something expressive like baking, art, or music. It could be a creative idea for evangelism. Your artistic expression could come out in the kitchen, the garden, or the garage. The possibilities are endless because God himself is limitless.
We understand that our spirit lives beyond this life, into eternity. In the meantime, God will meet our needs, and heal our hearts and minds. The goal is to let the peace of Christ rule. Do you have space in your life to think and reflect and feel what is happening on the inside? What is Holy Spirit revealing to you and sharing with you? It is time to find out!
Some things to think about:
· How have leisure time and creativity enriched your life and filled an internal need?
· What area of your life is it easiest to be creative in?
· Do you feel frustrated by the regimentation of your work and busyness?
· Have you organized your life until it has no room for leisure and contemplation?
Here is a little prayer, to inspire your discovery.
Father God, thank You, that I am learning to walk with You. Teach me, O God, to participate with You in leisure and creativity. I was made in Your image and You have things to teach me. Help me to have a listening ear and a willingness to step out of my comfort zone and participate in the life around me. Open up my mind and show me new ways to express myself and who You have created me to be as I interact with others. I am excited for more intimacy with You. Amen.
