O Come, All Ye Faithful

"As we enter into the season of Christmas, let’s not forget to prepare Him room in our hearts and our lives." Kathy Spampinato

Do the lyrics of your favorite Christmas Carols speak to you? As I write this, it is only December 2nd, but I awoke with the lyrics of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” ringing in my heart. They call me to come to the manger and the altar, to worship. Let’s take a look.

O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant,

O come ye, o come ye to Bethlehem;

Come and behold Him, Born the King of angels;

This first stanza bids us to come. It is an invitation to stop our busyness and notice the manger; to recognize the wonder and miracle of the King of Kings, born in a stable as an innocent babe. Jesus was not born in a palace of marble and gold. Scripture tells us of the humility and love of God in the miracle of Christ’s birth.

Philippians 2: 5-8 ESV “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

The God of the Universe chose humility; to come to us as a servant. He left the power and presence of the throne room of heaven, to be found lying in a feeding trough. He did not think it important to remain seated in His position of authority, but He embodied the sacrifice that we needed. We worship Him for His love extended on that first Christmas.

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Our response, when confronted with the glory of God wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger, is to worship. He is worthy! I love the opening line of the carol, that states that the faithful are found joyful and triumphant. We are filled with joy, and our lives filled with triumph over our challenges, when we present ourselves humbly, as Christ’s servants. Our faithfulness reflects His own, and propels us to victory in Him. We make Him Lord of our lives by choice, and He makes us His own, by His victory and His love.

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,

Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;

Glory to God, Glory in the highest;

Philippians 2 continues. Verse 8-11 “And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning,

Jesus, to Thee be all glory given

Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing.

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.

As we enter into the season of Christmas, let’s not forget to prepare Him room in our hearts and our lives. He is the King! He is the reason for the season! He brings joy to the world and to our hearts, with His very presence among us; Emmanuel, God with us. His name is to be exalted in our own hearts and lives. May we join with the saints and angels and declare that He is Christ the Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
